Ben 2nd at Antigonish in the IWK 250

250 WEEKEND REPORT
A 2nd for Ben at the IWK 250 in Antigonish, NS behind Dad Mike and ahead of Regan Smith.  Speed51 story HERE

At the Oxford 250, neither Terry Labonte nor Jeff Taylor made the race through the qualifiers. Officials ruled that Ben (and Mike) did not make "every reasonable attempt to qualify for the race" and therefore was not eligible for a previous winner's provisional.

Terry did receive a provisional to start in the back row with Kevin Lapage. Running in the top fifteen on lap 102, Labonte was caught up in the "Big One" wreck in turn one involving about ten cars and finished 42nd.  Speed51 story HERE

TEXAS TERRY TO THE TD Banknorth 250 in the #44
OXFORD, Maine - One of NASCAR’s living legends will continue the recent tradition of Nextel Cup champions competing in the TD Banknorth 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway. Terry Labonte, who won stock car racing’s top prize in 1984 and 1996 and was named one of NASCAR’s 50 greatest drivers of all-time in 1998, has entered the 34th annual late model extravaganza on Sunday, July 22.

Labonte, 50, plans to compete in a car prepared by Richard Moody Racing out of its spacious race shop in Auburn. He will attempt to make his fourth career start in the TD Banknorth 250 as a teammate to two-time race champion Ben Rowe of Turner. Labonte qualified for the OPS crown jewel in 1983, 1986 and 1992, with a best finish of 17th in his third try.  FULL STORY

Retired Two-Time Cup Champion Has
Short Track Plans

by Mike Twist - SPEED51

You can’t keep a true racer from going to the racetrack.

After two-time NASCAR Winston Cup champion Terry Labonte hung up his helmet after last fall’s Nextel Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, some people expected him to ride off into the sunset. Others expected him to resurface at the track before too long, and that is exactly what Labonte is planning to do. The twist is that Labonte is making plans to attend a pair of big short track races, and not looking to slide behind the wheel of a Nextel Cup car one more time.

Selections from the story:

“It’s an honor to have Terry Labonte drive one of our cars,” said team owner Richard Moody. “We love racing. We race different cars in different series all over the country, and Terry has always been that kind of driver, also. He still has that competitive fire, and I don’t think it will take him much time at all to show everyone that he hasn’t forgotten how to get around Oxford.”

Ben Rowe is looking forward to working with his new teammate.

“Terry was one of those drivers I always admired growing up,” said Rowe.  “He is a clean racer, but a hard-nosed racer, too. To me, he will always be the ‘Iron Man.’ He and Dale Earnhardt had those two great finishes at Bristol that none of us will ever forget. It‘s going to be a blast working with him.”

The Labonte family is known for being from Texas, but there they also have family ties to the Western Maine area.  Terry’s father Bob was born and raised in nearby Rumford.
