Sanborn Grabs Elusive First PASS North Series Victory
Richard Moody Racing 1-2 with Travis
Benjamin 2nd in the #17 |
GROVETON, N.H. -- Trevor
Sanborn passed Richard Moody Racing teammate Travis Benjamin
on lap 82 and never looked back, winning the PASS North
Series Summerfest 150 at Riverside Speedway on Saturday
night. The win was the first career PASS North victory for
Sanborn, a two-time PASS South Series race winner.
"What an unbelievable feeling," Sanborn said after leading a
race-high 69 laps. "I've run a ton of races up here (in the
North), I've led a lot of laps. I've always liked
Riverside... and I'm just so glad I finally won."
Sanborn led a 1-2 finish for RMR, the second in the
organization's history. Ben Rowe and Sanborn joined to give
RMR a 1-2 finish in the PASS 300 at Beech Ridge Motor
Speedway in September 2006.
Ironically, one of
Sanborn's close calls with PASS North Series victory lane
came at Riverside in 2007, when he was leading Kelly Moore
at the 100-lap mark of the Summerfest 150 before the track's
light system went out. Sanborn lost his full straightaway
lead, Moore beat him on the restart and Sanborn was forced
to settle for second.
On Saturday, however, there
were no such troubles for Sanborn.
After starting
fourth, he followed Benjamin into second place on lap 40.
The race was slowed by just one caution -- on lap 80 -- and
Sanborn capitalized on the break. After having his
straightaway deficit erased by the yellow flag, he passed
Benjamin just two laps after the restart by rolling around
him on the outside of Turn 4 for the lead.
"He gave
me plenty of room to get by him," Sanborn said. "I thought
even when he was leading that I would just save the car --
and when I got the lead I could just pull away.
"At
the end I was just praying there wasn't going to be a
caution, and thankfully there wasn't."

Riverside Speedway Race
Preview
Trevor Sanborn of Parsonsfield,
Maine, looks to grab that elusive first career PASS North
Series victory when the series heads to the Summerfest 150
at Riverside Speedway in Groveton, N.H., on Saturday, July
31. Sanborn has just one career start at the tricky
quarter-mile facility in northern New Hampshire -- but it
was a good one. He finished second for then-car owner Jay
Cushman in this event in 2007. Sanborn sits seventh in the
PASS North standings with five races remaining, having
posted three top-fives in eight starts while leading the
second-most laps (262) of all drivers this season.

TREVOR, WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON
RIVERSIDE SPEEDWAY?
I'm
kind of excited to go. I haven't been there in a couple
years. I'm sure we'll have a good car -- it seems that most
of the tracks we go to we always have a good car. I hope
when we get there that we're good right off the truck and
everything goes well for us.
HOW DO YOU APPROACH THE QUARTER-MILE
TRACKS LIKE RIVERSIDE?
It's definitely a little bullring. The fronstretch wall
comes up quick. It's a tough place and anything can happen,
so you just try to do what you can.
The last year I
was there in (Jay) Cushman's car, I had a whole straightaway
lead over Kelly Moore after the first 100 laps. Then all the
lights went out. He got by me on the restart because we were
running a crate motor. I was all over him at the end but
just didn't have enough time to get around him. What are you
going to do? |

Thompson International Speedway PASS 75 Race Preview
Trevor
Sanborn heads next to the combination PASS North Series/PASS
National Championship PASS 75 at Thompson International
Speedway in Thompson, Conn., on Thursday, July 22. The
track is not only the largest track the series competes on,
but Thompson is also home of the oldest asphalt track in the
country. Sanborn has a career-best finish of second at
Thompson in 2007 while driving for Cushman Competition and
the two-time PASS South Series race winner hopes to break
through for his first career PASS North win with Richard
Moody Racing.

TREVOR, THOMPSON SEEMS TO BE A PLACE
THAT EVERYONE LOOKS FORWARD TO RACING AT.
Definitely. Every time I've raced PASS, it's been a place
I've looked forward to. It's just really fast. It's a fun
race track.
I don't really know what the 'best' way
is to get around there. I haven't really raced there enough.
When I raced there, it seemed like there was only one groove
-- and that's the top groove.
DOES 75 LAPS FEEL LIKE A SPRINT THERE?
Not
really. It's still a pretty long race for there.
Seventy-five laps at a track like that's a lot of wear and
tear on the race car, compared to 150 laps on a short track.
It's more than enough. I don't know that it feels like it's
going to be that short of a race inside the car.
DOES THE FACT THAT IT'S A NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP RACE CHANGE ANYTHING IN TERMS OF YOUR
PREPARATION OR APPROACH TO THE RACE?
We're
still going there to win. We know some southerners will be
there with good cars, good equipment and good drivers, but
we'll keep doing what we do every time we go to the race
track.
I definitely feel like we're more than capable
of winning when we go there. |

Trevor finished seventh in the
PASS North Series Bastille 200 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee,
N.H., on Tuesday, July 13. The finish was Sanborn's fourth
top-10 in six races this season and kept him third in the
PASS North standings and in the championship hunt. Sanborn
ran as high as fourth in the first half of the event, but
ran into problems with the tire stagger on his No. 44
Richard Moody Racing Ford after pitting on lap 101. After
going a lap down, Sanborn rallied to get back on the lead
lap and earn the seventh-place finish.

TREVOR, HOW
WOULD YOU RATE YOUR NIGHT OVERALL?
I thought
we had a decent run. We started out pretty good and got up
toward the front. We thought we had a pretty good car in the
second groove, but couldn't do much passing on the bottom.
The car was just too tight off.
THINGS DIDN'T IMPROVE AFTER THE PIT
STOP, UNFORTUNATELY.
Halfway through we
pitted, and the right sides tires -- we were just worse the
next run. The stagger was off a little bit, and we just had
to survive. That's it.
HOW
EAGER ARE YOU TO GO RACE AT BEECH RIDGE IN JUST FOUR DAYS?
I can't wait to get back there. I'm pretty excited. We
know we'll have a good piece there, so hopefully we'll get
that first (PASS North) win.
The car's in good shape.
We'll just clean it up a little bit and get ready for the
next one. |

Taking a

improve his PASS North performance this season,
Travis Banjamin has joined the RMR program to drive
the yellow #17 in several PASS events.
At the
Lee USA Bastille 200, Travis scored a third in his
heat to start seventh in the 200 lap feature. Moving
to the front Travis battled Johnny Clark and moved
into the lead only to have a tire go down in a trail
of sparks. Back on the track, Travis was running
hard but was two laps down for a 15th place result. |

Beech Ridge Motor Speedway 7/10 Race Preview
**Postponed to 7/17 by Rain**
Trevor
returns to his home track at Beech Ridge Motor
Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, for the PASS North
Series 150 on Saturday, July 10. Sanborn has won two
NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Pro Series feature
events at the track already this season, and the
two-time PASS South Series race winner hopes to
notch his first career PASS North win this weekend.
After leading three times for a race-high 99
laps when the series first visited Beech Ridge back
in May, Sanborn finished fifth -- the first of three
top-5 finishes in five starts. He'll take the same
car back to the track this weekend that he led with
in May.

TREVOR, YOU MUST BE AS EXCITED AS
ANYONE ABOUT HEADING TO BEECH RIDGE THIS WEEKEND.
Definitely. I can't wait. I just feel like having my own
car is going to be a good thing. I'm not saying that
(Richard Moody Racing) doesn't have good cars, because we
do, but this car -- I've raced it so much there and we've
just got the right package in it for this track.
It's
like a safety net taking my car. We know it's going to be
good. I'm pretty confident that I can run up front and be
right there for the win at the end of the night.
HOW CLOSE ARE YOU TO THAT ELUSIVE
FIRST CAREER PASS NORTH WIN?
I thought it was
coming (last week) at Canaan. I felt like we had the best
car, but we just needed track position at the end or at
least to restart on the outside, because the outside was so
good.
We're really close, though. We are. It's always
something weird that gets us -- it's not the cars. The cars
are good, but we get somthing that happens on the race track
or a mistake on a caution flag or something like that. But
we'll get it.
WHAT DOES IT
TAKE TO HAVE SUCCESS AT BEECH RIDGE, A TRACK THAT SEEMS TO
HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE BAFFLED?
I think it's all
about riding it out and waiting to use your stuff up at the
end. A lot of people think you can drive it like it's White
Mountain or something -- go hard all the time and slide all
around in the corners and still be fast.
It's
different at Beech Ridge, though. It's a flat track. It's
all about the setup, and you need to maintain your stuff
until the end. It's a hard place to get that setup -- I know
I've been good there, but it's not really me. It's the setup
we have under the car. It's just a tough place, but it's no
different than Johnny (Clark) being good at a place like
Wiscasset or Unity. It's all about having the car figured
out at those places. |

Sanborn has three top-5 finishes
in the series' first four races, including a second and a

never started a race, nor attempted to qualify for one, at

TREVOR, HOW DO YOU APPROACH RACING ON
A TRACK YOU'VE NEVER SEEN?
You just have to
get out there and go for it. That's all I've have ever done.
Working with a team like I have helps a lot. The crew chief
(Brian Burgess) -- I know when we unload there, we're going
to have a pretty good car and the only changes we make are
going to be minor ones curing practice.
It's just
about me adapting to the track. I had a few issues adjusting
to track at Unity during the first practice, but in the
second and third practices we started to find it. I just
have to get the line.
HAS THE
TEAM STARTED TO GEL AFTER A COUPLE OF RACES TOGETHER?
We're still trying to figure each other out a little
bit. It will come as the races go on. We're all looking for
that first win -- I think that will definitely help when we
get it.
We're very close (to winning). We've had such
good race cars everywhere we go, finishing second and third.
Now I'm looking for that No. 1 spot. I'm tired of seconds
and thirds.
WHAT DO YOU KNOW
ABOUT CANAAN FAIR SPEEDWAY?
Not a thing. I've
never been there, and I know nothing about it, really. I've
seen it from the outside -- I worked up in that area car
crushing for my dad a while back. But I've never seen the
track itself, never even set foot on the grounds. |

Sanborn led the event on two occasions in the early

THOUGHTS ON FINISHING SECOND ON FATHER'S DAY?
It's great to come out of here in second -- and
I really want to wish my dad a happy Father's Day.
I've got to thank everyone on the crew, Richard
Moody, Subway. I can't thank everybody enough. This
is a great finish for us, and I'm pretty happy.
DID YOU HAVE ANY CHANCE
TO PASS RACE WINNER JOHNNY CLARK ON THE FINAL

I
thought I had a shot, but the tires just kept
spinning. I was free off (the corner) and just
couldn't get going. I needed a few laps for the car
to come into it. We tried to get what we could get,
and I'm just glad to finish this one.

Trevor Sanborn of
Parsonsfield, Maine, gears up for round four of the
PASS North Series season as the series heads
to the PASS 150 at Unity Raceway in Unity, Maine, on
Sunday, June 20. Sanborn sits fourth in the series
standings after a DNF last weekend at Speedway 660

running third at the halfway point. Sanborn has a
best career finish of fifth at Unity Raceway, and he
will compete in the Father's Day event as part of a

in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 40-lap Pro

TREVOR, HOW
DISAPPOINTING WAS LAST WEEKEND AT SPEEDWAY 660?
I knew we had a
pretty good car, and I'm still wound up about what
happened. We started out and we were really, really
good. We were fast, and we had a top-3, if not a
winning car. But we came to the yellow and everybody
got checked up behind a lapped car and I ran into
the back of Cassius (Clark). It messed up the duct
work and we overheated.
I know everybody has
their highs and lows in this sport, but it seems
like I've had my fair share of lows.
ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT
GOING TO UNITY RACEWAY THIS WEEKEND?
I can't wait to go.
(Crew chief Brian Burgess) said we have a good setup
for that place, and we should have a good car. It's
a little rough there, but it's a driver's track. I'm
excited about that.
There's a lot of give
and take at Unity, and you have to give more than
you take. That's just the way it is there. There's
not a lot of room, and you just have to survive
until the end.
YOU MUST BE LOOKING
FORWARD TO A RETURN TO BEECH RIDGE?
I am. Absolutely. I'm
hoping to make it three in a row there. We're going
there to win -- and hopefully that happens. If it
does, great, and if not, oh well, we'll just take it
and move on. |

and Cassius Clark in the second segment of the race, Trevor
looked like he was waiting for the final twenty-five laps to
make his move. But at lap 177, the #44 pulled high on the

during the exit from the track for the mid-race break for
tire changes and chassis adjustments for all competiors had
caused the motor to overheat and the race was over for

TREVOR, BEFORE THIS SEASON STARTED
YOU SAID THE ONLY THING THAT WOULD KEEP YOU FROM RUNNING FOR
THE BEECH RIDGE CHAMPIONSHIP WAS A SHOT AT THE PASS NORTH
CHAMPIONSHIP. HOW EXCITED ARE YOU ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY?
I can't really even explain it. I always wanted to race
on that tour from the beginning, and even though we didn't
have everything together this spring, now that it's come
together I'm really excited about it.
I know we can
be a contender for the championship, and I know that I've
got a great shot at finally winning my first PASS North
race. With this team, I know we can go to any race track and
win, and I have a ton of confidence in the crew chief (Brian
Burgess) and the cars. It all just adds up.
DO YOU
STILL PLAN ON COMPETING IN NASCAR WHELEN ALL-AMERICAN SERIES
PRO SERIES RACES AT BEECH RIDGE?
Absolutely. I won't
be able to run for the championship, especially because the
entire month of July it seems we're PASS racing. But I plan
to go there still on our off weekends and try and win some
races.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON SPEEDWAY 660 THIS
WEEKEND?
I haven't been up there in a while, but I
remember that it was a pretty tight little track. It wasn't
quite as banked as White Mountain (Motorsports Park), but it
was a lot like (All-Star Speedway). It's definitely more of
a driver's track, and I like those kind of places. It's fun
to get up on the wheel and really race the car on those
kinds of tracks. |
